We love to travel, so it’s no surprise we found ourselves in the city of Chihuahua, Mexico. Chihuahua is the capital of the north Mexican state by the same name, the largest of the 31 Mexican states. Lying due south of the Texas border, the semi arid terrain is extreme and hauntingly beautiful.
A city rich with history, it was in Chihuahua that Pancho Villa – the infamous Mexican revolutionary leader – made a name for himself and earned the reputation of being "hated by thousands, loved by millions." He also had a bit of a hand in the Mexican revolution - OK, more than a bit of a hand - and if you want to learn about that, they have a great museum set up in his honor in the city of Chihuahua.
The main reasons we set out to discover Chihuahua for ourselves, though, is the Copper Canyon- the grand portal to the Sierra Madres. Known locally as las Sierras, the Copper Canyon stretches out over an area over four times as large as the Grand Canyon, with the peaks reaching up to 10,000 feet and the crevices plunging down 6,000 feet. It is absolutely breathtaking, undeveloped and rugged terrain.
As we discovered, the Copper Canyon is also home to the Tarahumara Indians. Since the fifteenth century, or about the time of Columbus, Tarahumara culture and traditions have remained remarkably unchanged. Living off the land and shunning any contact with the outside world, the reclusive Tarahumara are closely related to the Apache Indians of the American southwest.
